Italy Memoirs | Day VI

14.04.14

We just got back in from watching the sunset, it was my first full sunset ever watched. It was incredibly beautiful and being here in Cinque Terre feels like heaven on earth, it's unbelievable, so tranquil and everyone is so friendly.

This morning to compensate for arriving so late and missing yesterday afternoon we woke up early, showered in the best shower we have had all week and went on the hunt for our cappuccino and croissant breakfast. riomaggiore is so little, almost like a toy town, and being up before all the American spring breakers it was very quiet and tranquil. We decided to explore, venture in to all of the side streets which are unsuspectingly pretty; we saw kittens and Ellie made more friends just as she has throughout this trip with countless pets and strays alike.

After having our fill of exploring we decided to walk to the sea front, which is constituted of a small marina in which small wooden boats with engines precariously plonked on the back are moored and not in any particular order either. I would hazard a guess that these boats are those of the local 'fisherman' but I can't be completely sure! Upon following a haphazard rocky path, carved in to and following the contour of the cliff, you will find yourself standing upon a rocky spit of land that supposedly makes a beach. We made a pile of rocks to signify our eternal holiday and took cringey but cute pictures.

*We have basically spent this whole holiday making and taking cringey cute photos. On the way back from the sunset we were both saying how much fun this holiday has been, and because we have film photos the fun continues when we get back and get to look through the developed photos as well!*

Once we'd been to the beach we wondered to try and take the coastal path but it was shut for maintenance, the only downside of visiting off-peak, and so we walked back and took a nap in preparation for our 'epic' hike. We climbed up and over a giant hill, hundreds of steps up as well as navigating what seemed to be a steeper slope the other side. Once arriving in town, hot, bothered, starving and a bit sweaty we ate a whole pizza each for lunch, which was obviously incredibly yummy and satisfying.

However, after gorging ourselves on pizza we knew we wouldn't be able to climb back so we sat down on the break water rocks for ages, just to chill out, and then got the train home to Riomaggiore to get changed to watch the sunset.

Now we're back after the sunset getting ready for dinner because it will be our last proper dinner in Italy, as tomorrow in Florence both of us are planning just to shower and sleep ready for the flight home on Wednesday and the potential stresses of Italian public transport again!

I'm so looking forward to it!... Not.

Anyway I'll write tomorrow.

(we were in Italy for another day and a half but didn't end up doing much at all, I forgot to write and if I remember correctly didn't feel as if those days would be worth writing about. Now looking back at my journal i'm obviously incredibly disappointed in myself but nevertheless I hope you enjoyed this series and keep tuned for more posts!)
